Revisiting South Africa - Hartbeespoort Dam

Just realised that I took loads of photos when I was in Johannesburg, South Africa but I've not posted any of them on the blog! Of course, that was before I discovered ImageShack®.

Here's some photos when we were at Hartbeespoort Dam, Pretoria. We stopped here for lunch and walked around the flea markets, on route to Sun City.


A popular weekend retreat - Magaliesberg, a lovely range of hills that cradle Hartbeespoort Dam.


Welwitchia Country Market - Touristy place, alot of small shops selling souvenirs etc.

There's a flea market run by the black community opposite the Welwitchia Country Market. Wooden stalls, alot of the same stuff but supposedly cheaper... it all depends on your bargaining skills...

We ate at the Upperdeck Restaurant. It's some sort of rest-stop for travellers going to Sun City. We saw alot of weekend bikers, clad in leather jackets etc... Outdoor sitting, live band, very relak jack feel...


I order this monstrous South German dish, Eisbein. According to the menu, it's fit for a gladiator!

All the angmohs were staring at the dish as it was brought out, then they started to stare at me...must have been wondering how this small chinese dude can possibly eat the whole thing!

Anyways, it was kickass to the max! It's actually a mega slab of pork - the part of the pig's leg, between the elbow joint and the foot joint. This huge chunk of meat is deadly & sinful... The skin is crispy, roasted to perfection, basted in rich BBQ sauce... The meat is oily tender, moist & juicy... In between the skin & meat, a scrumptious fatty layer... As you bite into it, the flavors explode in your mouth, bringing tears to eye and of course, instantly clogging up your vital arteries, one step closer to a heart bypass... I ate about 80% of that beast b4 I finally gave up....

Smiling from ear to ear, our tummies full, we continued our drive to Sun City...
